10/31/19 - Shelter in Place Call at Belmont High School

Hello Belmont High School Professionals, Students, and Families,

This morning, 10/31/19, BHS was temporarily, by making a call over our school-wide intercom system, placed in a state of "Shelter in Place" due to a medical scenario involving a member of our school community. Faculty, staff, and students respectfully remained in their learning environments for a short while until the situation could be addressed safely and respectfully by the appropriate personnel.

At no time was there any level of danger to the school or its inhabitants, and we were able to return to the day-to-day operations of teaching and learning shortly thereafter.

I am proud of our school's response to the Shelter in Place announcement and the respect and understanding that is so evident in and from our faculty, staff, and student body. The response was just as scenarios such as this would call for.

Thank you,

Mr. Matthew Finch

Red Ribbon Week

29 October 2019

Dear BHS Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers,

My name is Jennifer Lord-Paquin, and I am the Student Assistance Provider (SAP) here at Belmont High School. My role at BHS is to connect with students and provide support in a variety of areas including, but not limited to, substance use, body image, relationships, and peer pressure. Students are given a confidential platform in which they may share their concerns without fear of reprisal. Another part of my role at BHS is to provide students with educational opportunities regarding illicit substances and mental health awareness; one avenue through which to provide information and insights to the student body is through Red Ribbon Week.

BHS will be having its annual Red Ribbon Week next week from Monday, 10/28/19, through Friday, 11/1/19. This year's theme for Red Ribbon Week is "Send a Message. Stay Drug Free." Red Ribbon Week is observed at BHS because it provides students with an opportunity to receive education regarding illicit substances as well as methods of prevention of illicit substance use.

This year's schedule for Red Ribbon Week is as follows:

Monday 10/28/19 - Homeroom Door Decorating Contest

Tuesday 10/29/19 - Make Your Own Red Ribbon

Wednesday 10/30/19 - National Drug IQ Quiz

Thursday 10/31/19 - Students and staff wear red! Writing prompt: How will you incorporate this year's Red Ribbon Week theme into your life?

Friday 11/1/19 - There will be a speaker coming to speak with students on his experience with a TBI (traumatic brain injury), which was one result of a car accident. During the time of his car crash, this speaker had actually been within the legal limit of alcohol consumption. If your student does not feel that they are able to engage in that presentation, please have him/her come speak with an available staff member in the guidance office.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Lord-Paquin

Invite from Mr. Finch on Open House

10/2/19

Good afternoon, Belmont High School Community!

I am thrilled to announce - and to invite you to - the annual BHS Open House event! This year's Open House will take place on October 10, from 6 - 7:30pm

This evening will be an opportunity for you to meet the talented professionals with whom your BHS student(s) are working - both this semester and when semester two has begun! Additionally, there will be 30-minute presentations in the high school's cafeteria to allow us to introduce you to various components of BHS's grading practices, to explain what you're seeing on your student's Progress Report (being mailed out this week), to take you through an overview of our student information and grading systems, and to answer questions that you may have on a systems-level.

In addition to our faculty's/staff's making themselves available to you on 10/10, the BHS Counseling Department has been working to invite a variety of local service providers for you to meet! This panel is being arranged to ensure that all members of our community are aware of the array of resources available to families and the students of BHS. After all, it's a collaborative task to ensure that each learner has the best possible opportunity to be successful! These partners include Job Corps, NH Employment Services, the Community Action Program, Work Ready NH, New Hampshire Technical Institute, and Navigating Recovery.  We hope to confirm even more prior to Open House 2019!

Here is the schedule for the evening of October 10th:

  • 6:00 - 6:30 Resource Fair/Panel in Cafe & BHS Faculty in Their Classrooms
  • 6:30 - 7:00 Juniors and Seniors Students/Parents to Cafeteria for Info and Q&A
    • (Freshmen and Sophomores/Parents visit classroom teachers)
  • 7:00 - 7:30 Freshmen and Sophomores Students/Parents to Cafeteria for Info and Q&A
    • (Juniors and Seniors/Parents visit classroom teachers)

As you can see, we have attempted to create a schedule that supports elements of both flexibility and structure, allowing you to move about the building and interact with our faculty for up to an hour (depending on how long you choose to network with our service providers). You also have some direct interactions with building/district administration; I'm thrilled to have an opportunity to meet as many of our parents/families as possible in this, my first year as BHS Principal!

If you are unable to attend the 10/10 Open House, rest assured that you will have additional opportunities to interact with our faculty and staff, including in just a few weeks (October 23, 2019) as the BHS Counseling Department presents a College Admissions Panel to support parents' questions around competency-based grading and admissions processes. More information will be shared regarding that evening shortly! As always, we welcome you to contact members of the BHS faculty, staff, and/or administration to ask questions, schedule opportunities to meet, and to provide your own insights on your student's education!

There is no need to RSVP for the evening of 10/10; we simply (and sincerely) hope to see you there!

See you on the 10th!

Mr. Matthew Finch

Principal, Belmont High School
