REMINDER! Suicide Prevention Awareness Community Event- Sept. 27th

Dear Community Stakeholder,

Just a reminder of our Suicide Prevention Awareness Event tomorrow evening, September 27th at Belmont High School beginning at 5:30. This event's purpose is two-fold. The first goal is to educate all stakeholders on best practices around suicide prevention through our CONNECT trained youth leaders; knowing the signs and safe messaging. The second goal is for stakeholders to look at the resources available in the Shaker region in the event of a sudden tragic event and begin a conversation of what a Comprehensive Community Response Plan could look like for both Belmont and Canterbury communities...especially when tragedy occurs when school is not in session.

We value your time and experience and hope to see you tomorrow evening!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Gagnon                                  Laura Lavallee

Dear Parents:

The Halloween Hustle (formerly known as the Raider Run) is right around the corner! For those who are unfamiliar with this event, it is an annual race/walk hosted by the National Honor Society. In past years this three mile run/walk has taken place in late April, but will now be held on Oct. 31st, during the school day. Of course, given this date, it will be Halloween themed featuring costumes and spooky decorations! For those who aren't running or walking, there will be games and activities provided to make sure that everyone has fun.

Not only is this a fun event, but it also serves as a fundraiser for a National Honor Society Scholarship that will be awarded to one of the graduating seniors . It is free to run, but T-shirts and food will be sold in order to raise money. T-shirts must be ordered and paid for by September 29th: $10 for sizes small through large and $12 for sizes XL and XXL. Cash and checks are accepted. Checks should be made out to Belmont High School. Order forms have been given out to students, but they are also available in the counseling office or in the attachment below.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Haubrich, NHS Adviser.

Thank you,

BHS National Honor Society

New Blog Post and Coffee with the Principal

Dear Parents,

I would like to share my latest blog post about college admissions and competency-based transcripts.  It was written in response to a question I received from a parent about how a competency-based transcript (using a four-point scale) might impact college admissions.  This is one of the most frequently asked questions and I am happy to provide my perspective on it.

Please join us for coffee and light refreshments tomorrow evening at 6:00pm.  We will talk about all aspects of our transition to competency education, including how our new schedule helps to support our goals.  You will have the opportunity to learn more about our work and ask questions in a casual and relaxed environment.

I hope to see you there,

- Dave

Running Start information

Good morning, parents! If you have a student in any of the following classes, please read on:

English 12 Honors
AP English
Spanish III
Spanish IV
French III
Computer Graphics I
Computer Graphics II

Yesterday, a representative from Lakes Region Community College came to talk to students in the classes listed above regarding the amazing opportunity offered by the Running Start program. If your child is in one of these classes,he/she is able to earn college credit by doing the work that is already expected anyway! And, instead of paying typical college tuition of $660+, your child can take a RS class for only $150.

If you have not already seen the registration form and related information packet, please ask your child about it! The registration form does require a parent signature.  Applications must be turned in to me, with payment, no later than October 3rd. We will accept cash or a check made out to LRCC.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

Suicide Prevention Awareness/ Community Postvention Response Plan Development

Dear Parents of Belmont and Canterbury

September is Suicide Awareness month and therefore, our Connect Suicide Prevention Peer Leaders are hosting a community training evening here at Belmont High School on September 27th. Dinner will be served from 5:30-6 and work session from 6-8pm. Our student leaders have been trained to facilitate prevention related activities and lessons and have been well practiced by presenting in our health classes here at BHS.

It is our hope that this event will bring awareness to all stakeholders in both our communities; police department, fire department, paramedics, mental health provider, clergy, school administration, counselors and staff, emergency room providers, parents and of course our youth. Additionally, our goal will be to develop a Community Postvention Response Plan for any sudden tragic event that would be in alignment with best practices as outlined by the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

We are personally inviting you because your role in our communities is extremely important and is one of the identified stakeholders listed above. Your feedback and participation is a crucial component of the development of this plan.

Please let us know if you are able to attend as soon as possible so that I can plan accordingly for food.

We look forward to hearing from you and working with you and developing a meaningful plan that will help serve the people of our communities.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Gagnon                               Laura Lavallee
