Important and Exciting Belmont High School Info - Precovery Program!

12/26/19

Re: Semester One BHS Precovery Program!

Good afternoon, BHS Students and Parents/Guardians!

Before we get too deeply into the swing of the current vacation - which I hope is off to a restful, relaxing, and safe start - I wanted to update you on an upcoming resource program that is brand new to BHS: Precovery

What is Precovery?

Many students/guardians in our learning community are familiar with recovery programs, during which learners who were not able to earn credit within a course's traditional calendar but had reached minimum qualifying scores work with building professionals to earn credit and move forward to other learning. In our effort to provide additional and varied assistance to students, we will also be offering support programming prior to the end of the semester so students can work on standards/course grades in academic settings, with qualified teachers. The main difference (other than whether the extra help is offered before or after the semester's end) is that in recovery (support after the course has ended) a student is only able to recover grades to the minimum passing (and credit-earning) scores

In precovery, the student's efforts/work will simply be scored and entered into teachers' bodies of evidence as they are; therefore, the student can earn any score/grade that the teacher (and corresponding proficiency scales) deems appropriate. Precovery efforts could lead to scores above the minimum for passing/earning credit.

Am I/Is my student going to take part in Precovery?

Teachers will have updated their grades and will meet with all students - in all classes - on 1/2/20 and 1/3/20. They will also have their Precovery recommendations (teacher recommendation will be the determining factor in a student's qualifying for semester one Precovery) by the "end of business" on 1/2. This gives administration and the counseling department time to reach out to parents/students, beginning on 1/3/20, and get the eight days rostered and running.

When are the eight Precovery days?

Precovery will take place after school for 90-minute sessions (2:45 - 4:15). The Semester One BHS Precovery Program Dates are as follows:

  • Week One: Wednesday, 1/8 and Thursday, 1/9

  • Week Two: Monday, 1/13, through Thursday, 1/16

  • Tuesday, 1/21 and Wednesday, 1/22

  • Please note: there will be no Precovery sessions on the final day of semester one classes, 1/23/20

Our plan is to have one content-specific teacher from English, Social Studies, Math, and Science scheduled to work with students each of the eight days. Additionally, we will have two members of the Applied Arts Department each day, on a rotating basis (based on student need and teacher recommendations/availability).

Thank you for your continued support of Belmont High School and of our efforts to lead every student to preparedness for our ever-changing world!

Should you have questions about your/your student's participation in Precovery for a specific course, please contact that teacher directly. Also, feel free to let us know if you have questions/recommendations for making this first run of Precovery a positive one for BHS!

New BHS Resources Available! - College Admissions and Parent Portal Videos

12/19/19

Hello Belmont High School Students and Parents/Guardians!

As you'll see on the BHS homepage, we have multiple *new resources* that have been posted, one regarding our students' college/university plans after graduation (and application processes) and others that detail how parents can access students' grades to actively participate in guiding our learners to success!

College Admissions Q&A

First, you will find a recording of this fall's College Admissions Panel, which was hosted in the BHS Library and coordinated by the high school's counseling department! Four admissions representatives (from UNH, Plymouth State University, Castleton University, and Endicott College) discussed such topics as the processes involved in reviewing students' application packets, how the BHS approach to grading and reporting will allow our students to successfully be accepted into - and to succeed within - colleges/universities, and more! As you'll note in the video, it was consistently communicated that our students will be in GREAT position(s) as they move to their post-secondary experiences! Find this under the BHS CBE Resources tab or here, via YouTube!

Empower Parent Portal Guidance

Additionally, we have posted four videos that introduce components of, and guidance through, the Empower Parent Portal. Parents/Guardians should have received their login information in the mail by now; please contact the BHS counseling department if you have not received your/your student's information, and we'll work to remedy that as soon as possible! Again, while you can find these videos under the BHS CBE Resources tab, here are some direct links to those YouTube-hosted resources:

Should you have questions about any of these aforementioned resources, please feel free to contact the high school!

Thanks to all involved in getting these many projects up and running - and, as always, Go Belmont!

Important Belmont High School End-of-Semester Information

12/15/19

Good afternoon, Students and Families of Belmont High School!

As you have been informed by Superintendent Tursi (in an email sent on 12/11/19), there has been a slight change to the Shaker Regional School District calendar in the weeks following our coming vacation. Specifically, the professional development day that had previously been scheduled for 1/17/20 has been moved back a week (to 1/24/20). Therefore, students will have classes as normally scheduled on 1/17, but 1/24 will be a day for only professional staff at BHS.

This change has brought about our ability to schedule and communicate specifics regarding the end of the first semester of the 2019-20 school year. We wanted to take this opportunity to outline the salient dates/events through this final stretch of the semester to ensure that all members of our school community are on the same page!

  • Semester One at BHS will end on 1/23/20, the day before the rescheduled professional development day. Students will have through 1/23 to work with faculty and staff to complete work and ensure that they have achieved adequate standard and course scores to gain credit(s) in the courses they are enrolled in.

  • Speaking of standard and course scores, our faculty has committed to a post-vacation schedule of meeting with each student individually to communicate where each stands academically in their courses during the two days following the holiday vacation (1/2/20 and 1/3/20). By doing this, your BHS student will be aware of his/her academic standing as we enter the final weeks of course(s); he/she may, with an educated and aware outlook on their progress, elect to work with teachers to reassess and/or refocus academic efforts should he/she be dissatisfied with the scores he/she would receive as of that juncture.

  • We are also proud to offer, for the first time, academic "Precovery" over the course of the two weeks following 1/3. This grant-funded program allows us to provide BHS students 90-minute (2:45 - 4:15pm) sessions of focused, facilitated, and supported work with qualified teachers in various content areas; the allocated funds can even pay for district-provided transportation to participating students. More information regarding Precovery will follow this message in the coming days, but (in general terms) this is a tremendous opportunity for qualifying students to engage in reteaching, relearning, and reassessing in an effort to increase their level(s) of proficiency in given course standards - and to potentially increase standard/course scores prior to the end of the semester (and avoid having to recover after the start of semester two)!

  • While we will also offer recovery in the weeks following the end of semester one to qualifying students, as is our learning community's practice, students who recover standards/courses are only able to achieve the minimum passing score(s) in courses/standards; however, in precovery, students' assessment/standard scores can work toward achieving any assessment, standard, and/or course score outcome that teachers deem appropriate in their professional judgement(s).

  • The conclusion of Semester One represents the next official end-of-quarter eligibility check for athletics and extracurricular activities; students' scores in their semester courses will determine their participation eligibility status. Please refer to our Student and/or Athletic Handbook(s) for additional details regarding eligibility.

On behalf of all of us at Belmont High School, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a pleasant, rejuvenating, and safe holiday season! We at Belmont, regardless of the role(s) we play, are a family. We look forward to many more opportunities to collaborate with students, families, and community partners to enable our students to reach their full potentials!

Thank you!
