Lead Testing Update

Hello Shaker Regional Families and Staff,

The following is an update regarding our remediation process to address the recent lead testing results that were sent to you via email on February 5th.

I feel that it is best to start from the beginning. Once we received the initial results, we immediately shut off the water supply to all 23 faucets.  We then went through the process of reflushing all 23 faucets for a longer period of time compared to the first testing process. For the first testing we flushed for 30 minutes. For the second testing we flushed for a minimum of one hour. We then retested the water at all 23 faucets. Four of the 23 faucets passed with low action levels. That leaves us with 19 faucets that came back a second time with elevated action levels.

So where are we now? We are replacing all 19 faucets with new faucets that exceed current EPA standards. We are also replacing some of the plumbing that is easily accessible with plastic PEX piping. Once we have replaced all 19 faucets and the plumbing, we will then retest the water in hopes that all 19 faucets come back below the action level threshold.

Please be assured that all 23 locations, as indicated in my letter dated February 5th (attached), are locations that are not used to obtain drinking water. None of these locations are water bottle filling stations or water fountains. Most of the faucets are located in science classrooms or other classrooms such as the library or art room. Several parents have raised concerns about the faucets located in the kitchen at BES and CES. These faucets are used for hand washing only. They are not used for cooking purposes.

My goal with this update is to hopefully answer some of your questions and assure you that our students and staff are safe to drink and use water from all of the faucets that are currently running. I will keep you posted on the other 19 faucets.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding this matter.

Thank you.
Michael
