Alma and Empower

Hello Shaker Regional Families,

Our District is utilizing two software platforms to house your student's information, Alma and Empower.

Alma

Alma is our student information system that has your student's daily schedule, attendance, and contact information only. You will not see your student's grades in this system. This system is currently accessible to parents/guardians. If you have registered an email with your school, you should have received or will be receiving a welcome email from notifications@getalma.com.  The email will give directions on how to activate your account.

The welcome email looks similar to the following:

With your activated account, you can check your student's schedule, attendance and complete your student information forms or update your contact information during the school year.  If you have already activated your Alma account, you will not receive a new welcome email.

Empower

Empower is our learning management system used for grading and reporting. This system tracks your student's current progress in academic standards and work habits. This is where you can see your student's scores on individual standards, overall course scores (high school only) and Habits of Work scores. This system is currently not available to parents/guardians. However, I am pleased to inform you that we will be opening the parent portal on Friday, December 6th.  Information will be mailed home on December 6th that will include your parent/guardian account login credentials as well as directions on how to navigate the system and what you can expect to see within the system. There will also be a set of video tutorials located on our website at www.sau80.org/departments/curriculum. This is a new system for grading and reporting and we ask for your patience and understanding as we, students, parents, teachers, and administrators, are all learning this system. We hope that the information you receive in the mail and the video tutorials on our website will answer many of your questions. For more information or help accessing the site after you receive your login credentials, please contact the school's main office.

Thank you.

Michael

A.L.I.C.E. - Active Shooter Training

Dear Shaker Regional Families,

Beginning last spring and into this fall, we started training our staff in a new emergency protocol for an active shooter incident. The new protocol is known as A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate). The goal of A.L.I.C.E. is to give teachers, administrators, and students an options-based response approach during an active shooter incident, ultimately increasing the rates of survival for those affected. We are moving away from the traditional "lockdown" approach as the only option and giving staff and students an option to:

ALERT: Making as many people as possible aware that a potential life-threatening situation exists;

LOCKDOWN: Barricading and fortifying a space adding to the traditional lockdown techniques of closing and locking doors, shutting blinds, and turning off lights;

INFORM: Providing real-time updates as an extension of the initial ALERT;

COUNTER: Creating noise, movement, distance and distraction with the intent of reducing the intruder's ability to engage his/her targets;

EVACUATE: Putting as much time and distance as possible between the person and the intruder. This is the preferred strategy, if safe to do so.

These options are not designed to be sequential but rather to be utilized based on the set of circumstances that staff and students may be dealing with at the time of the incident.

Our next steps…

We will be hosting two parent information nights in January to explain the new protocol and answer any questions that you might have. The dates are January 6th at 6 PM at BMS and January 8th at 6 PM at CES. Our plan is to begin training activities with students in the spring. Activities will be customized by age and developmental groups in order to empower our students in a non-threatening manner. We purposely decided to wait to bring these activities to our students until our staff is comfortable with the new protocol. We also want to make sure we are giving you the opportunity to attend an information night and answer your questions.

In the meantime…

Please be assured that there are many safety and security practices in place at our schools. We take school safety very seriously. Our current protocols are in place. We continue to work closely with our local police and fire departments and conduct emergency response drills on a regular basis. A.L.I.C.E. will enhance our current emergency response operations by giving staff and students more options during an emergency situation.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you might have. I will send out a reminder of the parent information nights closer to the January dates. For more information about A.L.I.C.E., click on this link www.alicetraining.com.

Thank you.

11/6 Test of Phone/Text Alert System

Hello Shaker Regional Families and Staff,

With winter weather right around the corner, I would like to conduct a test of our phone/text alert system to ensure all of you receive my messages for cancellations and/or delays. I will be sending out a test phone call and text message this Wednesday, November 6th at 6 PM.  The call should go out to all staff, parents, and guardians listed in our system. If you do not receive the call, please contact your school's main office. They will ask for your name, your student(s) name, and your phone number(s).  We will then check to make sure the information in our system is accurate and make any necessary changes. If you do not receive the text and would like to sign up to receive district messages, please see the attached flyer for instructions.
Thank you.
