Belmont High School - June 5, 2020 Weekly Student and Family Update

6/5/20

Hello Belmont High School Students and Families!

Well, here we are! We would like to thank everyone for your dedication, support, and collaboration to reach our final day of classes for the 2019-20 school year! Our faculty has collected final pieces of evidence and will be reporting on standard/course scores by Wednesday, 6/10. Grades will be available through our Learning Management System, Empower! After grades are posted, our team will communicate with students who qualify for credit recovery so credits can be earned and 2019-20 can come to a close for each of our learners! Please note that 6/10 is also the first of two days of students' returning their school/class materials (details below).

Freshman, sophomores, and juniors - voting is still open for Student Council/Body Representatives! You have a say in who is leading the student body - but only if you vote! Voting is open until 5pm today; use your Chromebook for best results!

For students who have earned their credits, congratulations! You did it! We can't wait to see you again at the opening of the 2020-21 school year, which will be here before you know it! We'd prefer to say goodbye in person, but perhaps THIS REMOTE CELEBRATION can suffice for now?!

Updates and Reminders of Great Things to Come!

Returning Materials Plan

Students should plan to return school materials next week, on Wednesday or Thursday. Only seniors need to return their Chromebooks; freshmen, sophomores, and juniors can keep these through the summer and bring them back with them in the Fall! However, all students should be returning other class materials, books, etc. during the following allotted times. Students will be asked to drive around BHS the opposite direction that our traffic pattern normally follows and return materials near the main office entrance. Students will write their name and the teacher's name on a sticky note that will be placed inside the front cover of any books; these will be organized so that teachers can ensure that students have returned all required materials at a later date. Seniors will also collect caps, gowns, yearbooks, and other items when they return their materials (including Chromebooks) within this schedule!

Students are to return/collect their materials following this schedule (letters refer to students' last names):

Credit Recovery Plan

At the close of a course, a student will receive credit toward graduation if he/she reaches a course score (the average of all standard scores) of at least a 2.5 and all course standards are reported by the teacher as at least a 2. For example, in a course with four standards, the student would earn credit if he/she earned these standard scores: 2, 2, 3, 3.

Students are eligible for credit recovery if they fall within either of two qualifying categories:

  1. The student's course score (the average of their course standards) falls between 1.75 and 2.49 overall.

  2. The student's course score is a 2.5 or higher but at least one course standard falls below a 2.0.

In either of those cases, the student can still earn credit through recovery! Our teachers will create individualized plans for students to raise their scores to a passing mark; upon successful completion of the student's plan, the course scores will be revised and his/her transcript would be adjusted to showing the minimum passing score of 2.5!

We have chosen to separate our recovery contents into two sessions, which we hope allows students to focus on fewer recovery courses/plans at any one time (if the student is eligible to recover more than one course, that is).

Here is the breakdown of contents by recovery session (sessions run two weeks, Monday through Friday, 8am - 12pm):

Session One, 6/15-6/19 and 6/22-6/26

Session Two, 7/6-7/10 and 7/13-7/17

Senior Awards Recognition

In lieu of the traditional "Class Night" awards ceremony, next Friday, 6/12, we will be posting a prerecorded recognition for our seniors. This will include BHS class awards as well as some of the scholarships that our graduates are being granted! Please know that some scholarship organizations have been delayed or are unable to distribute funds this year. However, we are excited to recognize seniors' achievements! The link to view the presentation will be sent next week!

Class of 2020 Commencement Plans!

As has been presented to the Class of 2020 and their families, this year's unique commencement requires graduates to choose three guests with whom they will attend the ceremony. For those of you who are not able to attend in-person that day, we are working to livestream the ceremony as well as do some post-production work to commemorate this special class's many accomplishments! More information will come regarding how to log in/view the ceremony on the evening of 6/13, so stay tuned - and then tune in!

Our Upcoming Week at BHS

Our faculty and staff will be putting the finishing touches on the 2019-20 school year, including finalizing students' grades, communicating with recovery-eligible students/families, reflecting on our successes from this past year - and even finding time to engage in preparations for next school year - that's right! We're so excited for the future that we want to get right to the planning and prep for 2020-21!

We wish you all nothing but the best - now get out there and enjoy some sunshine!

Be well and…GO BHS!
