Teens on Tanning Forums

Teens on Tanning Forum As part of our Your Skin Is In program MFNE holds several Teens on Tanning Forums for high school students.  At the Forum teens gain leadership skills and learn the myths of tanning, melanoma facts, hear first-hand experiences from young melanoma survivors and share this information with their classmates. The Forum empowers participating teens to identify, plan and implement key initiatives at the community grassroots level to raise awareness about the dangers of tanning and adopt sun safe behaviors.  Forum participants are invited to join our Teen Advisory Council to provide feedback and advise MFNE on-going teen awareness efforts.

Testimonials

“After learning about melanoma at the Forum, I discovered a pre-cancerous freckle of my own. Because I was aware of all the signs and symptoms, I was able to recognize it and get it removed before it spread. I will definitely continue spreading awareness.” â€" Katherine Roy, senior, Moultonborough Academy, NH

“Having this information when I was in high school might have prevented my lifetime battle with melanoma.” â€" Kelli Pedroia, melanoma survivor and wife of Red Sox Dustin Pedroia.

THE FACTS…

  • Melanoma is the 2nd most common cancer in young adults ages 15-29
  • 2.3 million teens tan indoors in the U.S. every year
  • Using tanning beds once a month increases your risk of melanoma by 75%

In addition to fabulous entertainment, food will be provided, as well as the chance to walk away with a boat load of goodies through participation in several raffles that will be held during the event.  Tickets are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and senior citizens.  These are purchasable through any high school band member, the high school main office, or at the door.
