Update: School Calendar, Statewide Assessments, Remote Learning Plans, Flex Days

Good afternoon Families,

I hope everyone is doing well. The following are a few district-wide updates.

School Calendar/April Vacation:
There are no changes to the school calendar at this time. We will have our scheduled April vacation, April 27th - May 1st, so that all of our school community can take a break from the responsibilities of school, catch up on rest and have uninterrupted time with family.

Statewide Assessments:
The statewide assessments for grades 3- 8 and grade 11 that were scheduled for this spring have been canceled.

Remote Learning Plans:
Principals will be sending out revised Remote Learning Plans at 12 PM tomorrow. Changes will be highlighted and each plan will reference Flex days.

Flex Days:

Schedule:

Every Wednesday during remote learning, starting April 8th.

Purpose:

Weekly flex days allow for students, families, and educators to work more flexibly toward our common goal of learning together while we are apart. In building a flex day into the schedule, Shaker Regional School District acknowledges that this is a challenging time for all of us, that learning and teaching remotely is complex, and that everyone learns in different ways. Flex days give us all a chance to slow down and make sure we are doing our best.

Guidelines:

Flex days are...

Flex days are not...

  • Learning days

  • Opportunities to communicate between teachers and students and families

  • Time to practice skills, complete work, and ask questions

  • Time for teachers to plan and learn, both collaboratively and individually

  • Meant for students and their families to balance mental health and academic work

  • Days off

  • Scheduled with class meetings

  • Time for new work to be assigned

  • Days with deadlines or due dates

  • Duty days

  • Time for students to complete extra "homework" from other class days.

On Flex days, educators are encouraged to...

  • Meet together (virtually) during specified times (see school Remote Learning Plans)

  • Plan and prepare for remote instruction and assessment

  • Engage in professional learning

  • Respond to questions, provide guidance, and engage students by email - response time may vary as they attend to other professional responsibilities

On Flex days, families are encouraged to...

  • Continue learning

  • Communicate with educators

    • Students should contact teachers directly if they struggle or have questions with a concept or assignment

    • Parents can contact teachers and/or administrators with any questions, concerns, and feedback

  • Spend time outside

  • Play games

  • Read books

  • Tend to other responsibilities at home

Thanks to all of you for your efforts. We will continue to support each other as we work through this as a community.
Michael
