Updates: Appreciation Week/Food/End of Year Events/Returning Instructional Materials/Summer Programming/Reopening Our Schools

Good morning Families and Staff,

I hope everyone is finding time to relax on this snowy, Saturday morning. Below are a few updates.

Appreciation Week:

A big thank you to all of our staff, parents and guardians! This past week was Teacher Appreciation Week and School Nutrition Employee Week. May 5th was National Teacher Appreciation Day and May 6th was National School Nurse Appreciation Day. I believe that every week should be considered National Educator Appreciation Week. A time to appreciate all staff members who work in our schools and all parents and guardians who are working hard raising their children. You are all educators! Please know that you are appreciated every day, throughout the entire year. It's a team effort and all of you play a part in guiding our students to a successful future.

Food:

Our meal pick-up and delivery service will continue through the remainder of the school year. We are averaging 700 meals per week, thanks to our hard working food service staff! We are also exploring options for continuing our food service program throughout the summer.

End of Year Events:

Administrators continue to meet with various stakeholders to develop plans for end of year events, including senior graduation. Coordinating these events while following current stay-at-home restrictions is not an easy task. Nothing has been finalized at this point, but we are making progress.

Returning Instructional Materials:

We are developing a process for returning instructional materials, including Chromebooks. This will likely be a drop-off, drive through process during the week of June 8th.

Summer Programming:

We should have guidance from Governor Sununu and state health agencies relative to summer programming come mid-May. We are planning for three scenarios: 1. Full access for students and staff, 2. Partial access (small groups of 10 or fewer in a space that allows for social distancing) and, 3. No Access (remote learning).  IF we do open our schools this summer, we would start with district sponsored, required programming such as Extended School Year. Next, we would gradually open up our schools to other district sponsored summer programs and then outside organizations.

Reopening Our Schools:

The NH Department of Education has created a task force to develop guidance for school leaders to help with our planning for reopening schools in the fall. A guidance document should be available by June 30th, however we have already started the planning process. We are utilizing the Opportunity Labs Return to School Roadmap for organizing and planning. We are in the "Do First"  stages of this roadmap. So far we have taken the following steps::

Step 1: Develop a governance structure for planning and decision making in the following areas:

o   Wellness

o   Instruction

o   Facilities

o   School Operations

o   Technology

Step 2: Define and assign roles.

We have established a Return to School Committee and assigned the following roles:

Return to School Committee – (Leader: Michael Tursi, Superintendent)

Wellness – (Leader: Tonyel Mitchell-Berry, Director of Student Services)

Instruction- (Leader: Silas St. James, Director of Curriculum and Instruction)

Facilities – (Leader: Steve Dalzell, Director of Buildings and Grounds)

School Operations – (Leader: Debbie Thompson, Business Administrator)

Technology – (Leader: Jason Hills, Director of Information Technology)

School Leaders - (Principals: Aaron Pope, Matt Finch, Ben Hill, Mary Morrison)

Step 3: Articulate a Vision – This is directly from our Strategic Direction. Our priority is staff and student safety.

Our Mission…"Engaging all learners to succeed in their ever changing world"

Our Core Belief…"We believe that students learn when they feel safe – physically, emotionally, and socially."

Our Leadership Vision…"Shaker Regional leaders promote a safe, secure, and trusting learning community which encourages and supports creativity and innovation"

Knowing that the start of the school year may be different, it is recommended that we plan for four scenarios:

1.       School begins on time and remains open

2.       School begins on time and closes due to a second wave of COVID-19

3.       School opening is delayed (continue with remote learning)

4.       School opens under a hybrid model, a combination of in-school and remote learning.

Thank you for your patience as we plan for the end of this school year, the summer and fall. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.
Have a great weekend and Happy Mother's Day.
Michael
